The Meaning of the Resurrection

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most important event in the history of the world. It is the culmination of Holy Week. The cornerstone of the Christian faith; what separates Christianity from every other religion in the world. But what does Christ’s resurrection mean theologically? Why is it important for the
Christian individually?

1. The resurrection of Jesus Christ proves that He is the Son of God.
[Jesus Christ] declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. (Romans 1:3-4)

Jesus claimed to be the Son of God and the Messiah. According to Jesus, His resurrection was the “sign from heaven” that authenticated His ministry (Matthew 12:38-41, 16:1–4). Jesus’ claims about himself or His preaching wouldn’t matter if he never died and remained in the grave. He would be like every other religious leader who claimed to have special authority but eventually suffered the same fate. The resurrection of Jesus Christ, confirmed by hundreds of eyewitnesses (1 Corinthians 15:3–8), provides irrefutable proof that His Gospel is true, that He is the Savior of the world.

2. The resurrection of Jesus Christ means that believers are justified before God.
He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
(Romans 4:25)

Justification means to “be put right with.” Due to sin in a person’s life and the holiness of God, we are separated from Him, unable to have a right relationship with God (Romans 6:23, Isaiah 59:2). Without help, we cannot have the relationship with God that He intended and wants. In the death of Christ, He took our sin punishment upon Himself. When God released Jesus from death and raised Him back to life, He showed that He accepted Christ’s sacrifice for sin and gives us access to be justified and put back to a right relationship with God.

3. The resurrection of Jesus Christ means that Christ will judge the world in righteousness.
And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. (Acts 17:30-31)

Every person who has ever lived will be held accountable by God for what they have done. Unbelievers will be judged for breaking God’s law and face hell. He will hold believers accountable for their works and will reward them in heaven. God has appointed Jesus, whom He raised from the dead, to be our Judge. The perfect man who suffered the very things that we suffer and always obeyed God the Father perfectly (Hebrews 4:15) will judge everyone else who did not.

The resurrection of Christ is the triumphant and glorious victory of every believer. It gives Christianity what no other religion can. It gives validity to Christ’s ministry and shows us that our faith is not in vain. And gives us hope for a future resurrection of all
mankind.
