The Importance Of Christian Education

To understand the importance of Christian education, it is important to start at the beginning . . . with the family.  The concept of the family is extremely important in the Bible and was established by God from the very beginning.  In Genesis 1, we read, “God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him, male and female created he them.  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, …”  In the very next chapter, we read, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”  It is clear in scripture that God’s plan is for men and women to marry and have children, thus establishing families, the foundation of human society.

God has given parents the primary role in the education of their children.  In Deuteronomy 6, God gives the Israelite people this command as they are about to enter the promised land: “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.  And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.  And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.”  This principle is echoed in the New Testament when Paul encourages parents to “. . . bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4)

Parents have the ultimate responsibility of educating their children.  For the more than 90% of families who utilize some form of formal education outside the home, part of this responsibility is choosing who will educate their children.  This is a major decision that can affect a family for a lifetime or even generations down the road.

Children are the most vulnerable and impressionable people in society, and with five out of six attending public school, it is no wonder why Satan is using the public education system to attack and destroy young people.  The attacks on children are ubiquitous - they are everywhere.    From technology to social media, to school, to politics.  Pastor David, in his Sunday evening sermon, summed it up perfectly when he stated, “Pay attention . . . because . . . your kids are getting catechized.  You may not be doing it, but someone is teaching your children a worldview.  Everyone gets catechized at the end of the day.”

With such an onslaught, Christian education is an excellent alternative for many Christian parents.  Some advantages to Christian education include:

Biblical Teaching
Students are taught the Bible every day, in contrast to public schools, where the Bible has been banned, and the secular humanist agenda is regularly promoted.

Shared Values
Students are taught to love God and others.  This is in stark contrast to the values prevalent in public education.

Safety
Christian schools are safer than public schools. Students are students; however, students who attend Christian schools are generally more receptive to discipline and correction. Discipline issues generally occur less often and are less severe.

Christian Teachers
Students in Christian schools have teachers who genuinely care for them and pray for them regularly.

Positive Role Models
The Bible says in I Corinthians 15:33, “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”  In other words, bad company will corrupt good morals or character.  Students will be exposed to bad company regardless of where they attend school.  However, in a Christian school, students will be much less likely to find themselves surrounded by destructive influences and far more likely to be surrounded by positive role models and others who care about their holiness and sanctification.

Private Christian education is not free; it is a sacrifice, to be sure. However, the benefits of Christian education cannot be underestimated, and the Christian foundation laid during these formative years will be invaluable when the storms of life inevitably come.
