Why Serve?

Walk into almost any church on a Sunday morning, and you’ll notice a familiar pattern—a small group of dedicated volunteers carrying the weight of ministry while many others simply attend. Too often, serving is viewed as optional, reserved for those who are “gifted” or “have extra time.” But Scripture makes it clear: serving is not just for a select few—it’s a calling for everyone who follows Christ.

At Fellowship, I’m incredibly grateful for the volunteers who faithfully serve each week. But the reality is, we’re not where we need to be when it comes to full ministry participation. My hope in this article is to help every member of our church see the importance of serving—why it matters, how it strengthens the church, and how each of us has a role to play. Here are five reasons why serving in Fellowship Baptist Church is essential.

1. Serving Imitates Christ

Jesus Himself set the ultimate example of serving. In Mark 10:45, He said, “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Christ’s entire earthly ministry was characterized by selfless service, whether through healing the sick, teaching the crowds, or ultimately sacrificing Himself on the cross. When we serve in the church, we follow in His footsteps.

2. Serving Strengthens the Church Body

The church is described in Scripture as the body of Christ, with each member playing a vital role. 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 emphasizes that every believer has been uniquely gifted to contribute to the body’s overall health and function. When members of the church serve according to their gifts, the church is strengthened.

3. Serving Enhances Our Love for the Church

The more we invest in something—whether time, effort, or resources—the more our hearts are drawn to it. When we serve in the church, we stop seeing it as just a place we attend and start seeing it as our church, a family we are personally invested in. It’s easy to critique the church from the outside, but when we serve, we get a front-row seat to how God is working. Whether it’s seeing lives transformed through discipleship, witnessing children grow in their faith, or welcoming new believers, serving allows us to experience the church’s mission firsthand, making us more passionate about its success.

4. Serving Builds Relationships and Unity

One of the greatest joys of serving is the relationships that are formed along the way. In many churches, people tend to stick with those they already know. But serving naturally connects us with people we might not otherwise interact with—different ages, backgrounds, and life experiences. As we work together, we develop a greater love and appreciation for the whole body of Christ, rather than just our small circle.

5. Serving Advances the Gospel

The mission of the church is to make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20). When believers serve faithfully, they create an environment where the gospel is proclaimed and lived out in tangible ways. Whether it’s through hospitality, teaching, outreach, or acts of mercy, every service opportunity contributes to spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. Serving also provides opportunities to witness to those outside the church. When unbelievers see a church that joyfully serves one another and the community, it becomes a powerful testimony of the love of Christ.

Hopefully, you now see that serving in the local church isn’t just an extra thing to do—it’s a vital way to express your love for Christ and His people. If you’re wondering where to start, I encourage you to explore the many ways you can get involved at Fellowship. Stop by the resource desk this Sunday to learn more about current service opportunities. Take some time to pray and ask God where He would have you serve.
