Nursery: More Than Childcare
When we think about the different ministries in our church, I wonder how often we think about the nursery. After all, there isn't any preaching or congregational singing going on in those rooms. Most of the time, it's changing diapers, rocking babies, wiping noses, and keeping little ones happy until their parents return! But I hope we never lose sight of just how important this ministry really is.
In Mark 10:14, Jesus said, "Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God." Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus showed great love and compassion toward children. They mattered to Him, and they ought to matter to us!
It's easy to think of nursery ministry as simply caring for children so their parents can attend church. But it's so much more than that! Think about the young mom and dad who come to church after a long, exhausting week of caring for little ones. Because someone is willing to serve in the nursery, they have the opportunity to sit together, hear God's Word preached, and be encouraged in their walk with the Lord.
Or think about the family visiting our church for the first time. Leaving their baby or toddler with people they don't know can be difficult! What a blessing when they're greeted by someone who is kind, welcoming, and genuinely happy to care for their child.
And then there are the children themselves. They may be too young to understand everything we're teaching them, but they're certainly not too young to experience kindness, patience, gentleness, and love! We're not simply watching children. We're serving families, encouraging parents, and ultimately serving the Lord!
With that in mind, I want to encourage you to prayerfully consider whether this might be an area where you could serve. You don't need years of experience caring for children, just a willing heart and a desire to love these little ones well. I would especially love to encourage our teenagers to get involved! Young people ages 13–15 may serve alongside an adult in our crawler and toddler nurseries, and those 16 and older may also serve in our baby nursery. We would also love to have husbands serve alongside their wives in our crawler and toddler nurseries!
To those of you who already serve so faithfully, thank you! I know nursery duty isn't always easy, and sometimes you may leave feeling like you haven't accomplished much. But please don't underestimate the importance of what you're doing. Sometimes serving the Lord means doing things that very few people ever see or recognize. But the Lord sees, and your faithfulness matters!
My prayer is that we would always see our nursery as more than just a place where children are cared for during church. It's another opportunity God has given us to love children, serve families, and ultimately serve God, Who is worthy! And what a privilege that is!
On Sunday, November 15, at 5:30 PM, we'll be having a nursery ministry meeting in the Fellowship Hall. This meeting is for everyone currently serving, as well as anyone interested in becoming involved. We'll discuss procedures, expectations, scheduling, and ways we can continue making our nursery a safe and loving place for our children and families.
