What If No One Notices

There is something in all of us that wants to be noticed. We work hard, and we hope somebody sees it. We serve, and we hope somebody appreciates it. We sacrifice, show up, give, help, and do the right thing—and it can be discouraging when nobody seems to notice. Eventually, we may even wonder: Why keep doing this if nobody appreciates it?

If you’ve ever felt that way, Colossians 3:23–24 gives us three simple observations that can encourage us when it feels like no one notices:

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”

1. God sees what others don’t.
He sees the parent who keeps patiently caring for a child. He sees the employee who does the right thing when nobody is watching. He sees the church member who quietly serves without recognition. He sees every quiet sacrifice and every unseen act of obedience. People may overlook your faithfulness, but God never does.

2. You’re serving Christ, not people.
Paul says, “You are serving the Lord Christ.”
That changes everything. If I’m ultimately serving people, their response determines whether my service feels worthwhile. If they appreciate me, I’m encouraged. If they overlook me, I’m discouraged. But if I’m serving Christ, I can remain faithful whether anyone applauds or not.

The meal you cooked can be for Christ. The classroom you cleaned can be for Christ. The person you patiently helped can be served for Christ. The ministry responsibility nobody thanked you for can be done for Christ. And there are no insignificant acts of faithfulness when they are done for Jesus.

3. God will reward what others overlook.
Paul says, “from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.”
Our faithfulness may go unnoticed now, but it will not go unrewarded forever. Christ sees every act of obedience offered to Him, and He promises that our labor for Him is never wasted.
So the next time you do something good and nobody says thank you, nobody mentions your name, and nobody seems to notice, remember: God sees it. You’re serving Christ. And your faithfulness is not forgotten.
