From Membership To Family Part 2

Last week, I wrote to our church family about our responsibility to help new members feel like family. This week, I'd like to speak directly to those of you who have recently joined Fellowship Baptist Church.

First, let me say how thankful we are that the Lord has led you here. We truly believe church membership is more than placing your name on a membership roll. It's becoming part of a spiritual family, and we're grateful God has brought you to Fellowship.

One question I occasionally hear is, "How do I really get connected?" While every relationship develops differently, I'd like to encourage you with four simple commitments that God often uses to help new members become part of the life of the church.

1. Be faithfully present

The most important step is also the simplest: be here. Make gathering with God's people a priority—not just on Sunday mornings, but on Sunday evenings and Wednesday nights as well. Every service is another opportunity to worship, hear God's Word, and build relationships with fellow believers. You simply can't become deeply connected to people you rarely see. Over time, faithful attendance creates familiarity, and familiarity often grows into meaningful friendship.

2. Don't slip in and out.

It's easy to arrive just before the service begins and head for the parking lot as soon as it's over. But some of the sweetest fellowship in our church happens before and after the services. Give yourself a few extra minutes. Introduce yourself to someone. Stay for a conversation. Ask someone how you can pray for them. Those brief conversations may seem small, but they're often the building blocks of lasting friendships.

3. Join a Connection Group.

Our Connection Groups are designed to help our large church feel smaller. They provide an environment where people know your name, pray for your needs, study God's Word together, and encourage one another throughout the week. Some of the closest friendships in our church have been formed around a classroom rather than a sanctuary. If you haven't joined a Connection Group yet, we'd love to help you find one where you can grow and belong.

4. Find a place to serve.

There's something about laboring together for the cause of Christ that naturally deepens fellowship. As you work shoulder to shoulder, you'll share conversations, encourage one another, and build friendships that often extend far beyond the ministry itself. God never intended for His people to be spectators. He has gifted every believer to serve for the good of the body (1 Peter 4:10), and in doing so, He often knits hearts together. If you're ready to take that step, I encourage you to stop by our Serve Wall in the foyer. There you'll find a variety of ministry opportunities and a brief description of each one.

Please don't feel like you have to do all of these things immediately. Relationships take time, and that's okay. But if you'll faithfully worship, linger long enough to know people, participate in a Connection Group, and find a place to serve, I believe you'll discover what so many of us already know: Fellowship Baptist Church is more than a place to attend. By God's grace, it's a family to which you belong. We're thankful you're here, and we look forward to growing in Christ together.
